Monolith — rule field
01The project
Monolith is a self-initiated poster series for a fictional lecture programme on architecture and public space. The constraint was radical: one circle, one rule field, and whatever the content demands.
Across the series the circle moves, scales and gets interrupted, but the surrounding rule field stays fixed — a visual constant that makes the series recognisable at a distance.
02Objectives
Create a series that reads as one family while giving each lecture its own character; keep production to a single pass on a two-colour press.
03Creative concept
The rule field is the city grid; the circle is the building. Their relationship changes with each lecture, and that relationship is the poster.
04Design process
I set a fixed 12-step rule field and varied only three parameters — circle position, circle scale and rule interruption. Thirty-two variations were printed and reviewed; the final eight became the series.
05Final solution
Eight A1 posters, a programme cover and a signage strip, all built from the same rule set.
06Outcome
A coherent eight-poster series. Concept study only.
