01The project
Grain & Tide is a self-initiated editorial study: a 64-page book about the textures of coastlines, built almost entirely from abstract line work rather than photography.
The book alternates between dense wave fields and long, quiet spreads where a single rule carries the page.
02Objectives
Explore how abstract imagery can carry a place-based narrative; design a print object that rewards slow looking; keep production within two inks.
03Creative concept
Repetition as landscape. Each chapter increases line frequency until the image becomes tone — a printed metaphor for distance and weather.
04Design process
Studies were drawn as code-like line systems, then proofed at print scale. The grid runs on a 12-column structure with a deliberately broken baseline in the final chapter.
05Final solution
A 64-page concept book with cover, chapter openers, colophon and a two-ink print specification.
06Outcome
A complete book dummy and print specification. Concept study, unpublished.
